Update on Service Issues

The following is an update for California customers who are experiencing difficulties accessing their wireless and broadband networks.
Authorities are currently investigating a communication infrastructure attack in the Los Angeles area. The criminal incident occurred in the early morning of June 15, involving vandals deliberately cutting fiber optic lines, leaving more than 50,000 residential customers and over 500 business customers experiencing outages for up to 30 hours. Preliminary findings indicate the motive behind the act may be linked to the high market value of the copper components contained within the cables.

The attack targeted Spectrum, AT&T, Verizon and AboveNet, disrupting connectivity and redundancy affecting wireless cell towers, a U.S. military base, 911 emergency dispatch systems, local fire and police departments, healthcare facilities and hospitals, financial institutions, court buildings and educational institutions.

Tony Carvalho, NHC Director of Operations has indicated that this has been going on for some time with no end of incidents in sight:

Over the past year, we have seen a steady increase in customer-impacting issues caused by cable cuts due to vandalism—primarily in California, though incidents have also occurred in other states. We are now averaging at least one reported vandalism-related outage per week. Several customers have been affected multiple times, and these disruptions have become detrimental to normal business operations.”
