What is SD-WAN?

Software-defined wide area networking (SD-WAN) is a technology that leverages time-tested software-defined networking principles to dictate where different traffic types go for what purposes, while operating over any underlay network. From an edge appliance, SD-WAN creates an overlay network of private tunnels to cloud gateways which serves as the core network function for the WAN. Application traffic (voice, data, and other critical real-time applications), as well as cloud applications and hosted traffic all flow through the tunnels to the gateway and off to their destinations. SD-WAN establishes and maintains these tunnels over all available network access links dynamically, which essentially means your traffic is always going to get to where it needs to go (and back).

Automated Bandwidth Discovery

Every edge appliance establishes DMPO tunnels with the gateway(s) and runs continuous bandwidth testing between the edge and the gateway. This allows the SD-WAN system to know which link is performing the best in order to send critical applications across the optimal link and dynamically switch between links when those conditions change. 

Continuous Path Monitoring

This function monitors each packet of data for performance. This allows the SD-WAN technology to decide which packet will travel over which link to get to where it needs to go once reassembled by the gateway.

Application-Aware Per-Packet Steering

Business policy-based per-packet steering behavior for more than 2,500 applications, out of the box. There is no need to assign a policy to achieve application-aware prioritization, but you may at anytime modify or create new policies.
